Work continues to upgrade these. The geological areas or polygons are labelled or attributed with a name based on their lithostratographical, chronostratographical or lithodemic nomenclature and their composition rock type or lithology. This information is arranged in two themes: bedrock geology and superficial deposits. Faults and other linear features are available in a separate theme. Geology maps are the foundation for many other types of earth science-related maps and are of potential use to a wide range of customers.

Facilities are available to view, interrogate, and print maps through an easy-to-use web interface, and you can download the geological map data for use in geographical information systems.

A wide range of BGS datasets are available including their renowned , onshore geology data product as well as the , and , datasets. The geology data is considered invaluable in a wide range of disciplines. Subjects such as civil engineering, ecology, coastal erosion studies, and natural resource planning make use of the data along with more obvious academic disciplines such as the earth sciences. Global Digimap Global Digimap provides access to global datasets in cartographic styles and downloadable formats that are useful to you.

Downloading style files Digimap also provide style files so that you can use standard colours for the layers in the geology data that they provide.

Unzip the downloaded folder - you should end up with a folder containing several files with an extension of. You will be using this file later so remember where you saved it to.

Warning The bedrock style file is missing a key rock type for this area. Adding BGS data to your map The geological data from Digimap is provided in shapefile format in tiles which match the printed map sheets. Find the unzipped bgsk folder in your Browser panel and have a look at the contents of the ew folder.

The name refers to the map sheet number and England and Wales. Add all three of these layers to your map by dragging them into the Layers panel Group the geology layers by selecting all three and right-clicking Select to Group Selected then give the group a name like Geology. Go to the Symbology tab of the properties At the bottom left of the symbology is a button which says Style. Click on this button and select Load Style This opens the Database Styles Manager.

Now click on OK and the Bedrock layer should be symbolised. Again, you might have to wait for a while for this to happen. Make sure you save your map at this stage. See our User Agreement and Privacy Policy.
